Helmstetter's one-hitter leads Monroeville in opener

FREMONT — Carley Helmstetter struck out 12 and allowed a single hit as the Monroeville softball team routed Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic in an 11-0 non-league win that took only five innings at Clark Park.

Up 5-0 entering the fitth inning, Monroeville (1-0) blew the game open with a six-run top half. Helmstetter helped her own cause in the inning, tallying an RBI single to drive in one of her game-high three RBIs.

Brooke Kime paced the Eagles with a 3 for 4 effort, which included a single, double and a triple. Alexandria Carper, Helmstetter, and Skiler Hershiser all had two hits each. Kime and Payton Scheid both finished with two RBIs, while Taylor Reer tallied a double.

In the circle, Helmstetter walked only two hitters, throwing a first-pitch strike to 12 of the 16 SJCC batters she faced.

TENNIS

Norwalk 3, Port Clinton 2

PORT CLINTON — The Truckers used a doubles sweep to slip past the Redskins in Wednesday’s SBC crossover battle between two of the area’s top programs.

Ben Traczek and Wyatt Brown paired up for a 6-1, 6-0 win for Norwalk at first doubles over Port Clinton’s Elliot Auxter and Cooper Kowal. Eric Hull and Sam Vanderpool completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over the team of Connor Bechtel and Ben Lucas.

The Truckers, now 1-0, got a third singles win from Jordan Cotterill, who topped Quincy Kowal 6-2, 6-3.

At first singles, Port Clinton’s Andrew Fillmore and Norwalk’s Austin Brown battled to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. Ultimately, it was Fillmore coming out on top, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.

The Redskins (1-1) other win came from Max Brenner at second singles as he defeated Andrew Riley 7-5, 6-4.

"Always great to open the season with a victory,” Norwalk coach Chris Higgins said. “We made quick work at both doubles points as Ben, Eric, and Sam all made their varsity debuts. Wyatt provided plenty of power for the first doubles team.

“At singles, Austin and Andrew found themselves both in close matches, and Jordan, also in his varsity debut, clinched the match at third singles,” he added.

Edison 4, Bellevue 1

BELLEVUE — Edison topped the host Redmen in Wednesday’s SBC crossover match to move to 2-0.

In singles action, Edison’s James Hill earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Logan Miller, while Bryan Johnston defeated Justin Baxter at second singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Bellevue’s lone win came at third singles where Nat Fox beat Carter Kramer 6-1, 6-2.

At first doubles, the Chargers’ duo of Nick Lombardi and Connor Goodwin were a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Richie Stombaugh and Zach Fisher. The No. 2 doubles team of Nick Shupe and Lincoln Meredith beat the Redmen duo of Gunnar Lilly and Zach Eskins 6-0, 6-1.
