He was born March 5, 1928, in Hippo, Ky., to Will and Rebecca (Shepherd) Stephens.
James had worked on the B&O Railroad, where he retired in 1990, after working for 37 years. He proudly served his country in the Army and Air force.
James is survived by his son, Rodney (Deborah) Stephens; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Clara (Collins) Stephens; brothers and a sister; two daughters; and a son.
Family and friends may gather 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Secor Funeral Home, Willard. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the funeral home, with Pastor Fred Rowe officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven.
