Charles “Charlie” Sharfenberg

MONROEVILLE — Charles “Charlie” Sharfenberg 90 passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 16 at Stein Hospice.

Charlie was born on May 28, 1928 in Monroeville, Ohio to the late Charles and Edith Sharfenberg.

Charlie attended Norwalk and Monroeville schools. At the age of 17, he joined the National Guard, later to receive an honorable discharge. Charlie served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1953 in Greenville, South Carolina and was later stationed at Rhein-Main Air Base near Frankfurt, Germany. While serving he played flag football and was part of a championship team.

In February 2018 Charlie was surprised with an honorary graduation at Monroeville High School, receiving his well-deserved high school diploma.

Charlie worked several years as an owner operator truck driver for various companies. Upon retirement, he worked helping Adolph Fischer on his farm.

Charlie always enjoyed helping others. Spring car racing was also an enjoyment for Charlie.

Charlie was a life member of Norwalk VFW Post #2743, AMVET Post 17 and a 64-year member of the American Legion Post #41.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nancy (nee Zumbrun) who he married on February 2, 1953. He is also survived by his son Craig (Barb), daughter Tenille (Dustin) Vanderpool; grandson Craig Jr., three great-grandsons; Craig III, Lawson and Luke Vanderpool and many other relatives. 

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his step-mother Beatrice, grandson Heath and sister Martha Williams.

Visitation will be held at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, on Monday, April 22, 2019 1pm – 7pm. Funeral Services will be Tuesday beginning at 11 am.
