NORWALK — Donald Austin McCabe, 95, of Norwalk, Ohio passed away peacefully on April 4, 2019 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.

He was born on April 24, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, the only child, to the late Earl and Florence (nee Sponseller) McCabe.

Donald graduated from East Cleveland High School in 1941 and attended Case Western Reserve University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served his country during WWII. In 1952, Donald and the love of his life, Carol J (nee Skeeles) McCabe eloped in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They spent 66 years together before her death in July of 2018.

He had many interests but he truly loved walking and exploring the area “Rails to Trails”, Cuyahoga Valley State Parks, Schoepfle Gardens in Birmingham, and the marshlands and preserves along Lake Erie. Don also enjoyed a good cold beer and Keno.

He is survived by his children; Catherine “Cathy” (Greg) Dee, Claudia “Susy” (Mark) Mullins, Jonathan “Jon” McCabe and Maureen “Reeny” (Mike) Harshberger; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and in 2018, his wife Carol.

A private family inurnment is being planned for a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Norwalk.

The family would especially like to thank the Ohio Veterans Home and Stein Hospice for the tender care and comfort they provided.
