Dave was a true American Hero. He was a man of great character, honor, humility, and respect. David was born November 17, 1939 in Greenwich, son of the late Chester and Bessie Shepherd. After graduating from Greenwich High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps. David was a decorated Marine, serving two tours to Vietnam, in country for 2 years and 2 months. Due to his fidelity, expertise and courage, Dave was field promoted in Vietnam from the rank of Gunnery Sergeant to Second Lieutenant then achieving the rank of First Lieutenant before being decommissioned due to the lack of continued need of officers after the Vietnam war. Dave was returned to Gunnery Sergeant and made the rank of E8 - Master Sergeant before retiring with his highest rank held of O2/1LT. Dave’s tours also included 11 years with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, for his service and actions he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation medal. Seldom idle, after his military work day, and knowing no quit, and having the desire to always provide more for his family, Dave would work second jobs. Upon retirement his hard work continued with General Motors, were he worked in salvage and retired as a Die Setter. Ironically earlier when David was a teenager, he had helped in building the same GM plant from which he retired.
Dave was a 32nd Degree Master Mason and Shriner from the Hamasa Shiners of Meridian, Mississippi. He was a past Master for the Grand Lodge of Mississippi. Dave was most recently with the Masonic lodges in North Fairfield and Willard.
Dave continued his call for service where he was a proud member in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Marine Corps League. Dave held Life memberships in each.
He was a member of the Greenwich Church of Christ, the Republican Party and NRA.
David will be fondly remembered by his family as a genuinely admirable, wonderfully kind, unmistakably honest, and amazingly great man. He was funny, flirty, compassionate, gracious, and generous. He was an avid Ohio State football, Cleveland Cavs, Browns and Indians fan. Dave cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren that he mentored and instilled some of himself into.
