Students, community combine for service project

The Mapletree Road Race was held on the Fourth of July before the parade, beginning and ending at the Huron County Fairgrounds.

Mark and Pam Bellamy started the Mapletree Road Race in 2017 as a fundraiser for the Michael H. Hay Scholarship.

The scholarship was established to honor St. Paul High School alumnus Mike Hay’s engaging and giving spirit along with his love of music, St. Paul and the Norwalk community. It is awarded to deserving students in grades seven through 11 who demonstrate a love of music or the arts or who demonstrate a love of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) and work on a community service project throughout the year.

The students who serve on the committee gain working knowledge and experience in project management, marketing, communications and advertising. They also must participate in managing a budget and planning the logistics of the event.

“Besides practical learning aspects, we hope these students will carry with them the value of giving back to college and throughout their working lives,” Mark and Pam Bellamy said.

This annual race strives to bring the entire community together to support local education, physical fitness, team spirit and most importantly, patriotism.
