Don't forget to buckle up

As the unofficial start of summer, the Memorial Day holiday weekend is a busy time for Americans.

Each year, the highways fill with families in vehicles on their way to start their summer vacations. To help keep drivers and passengers stay safe, the Huron County Safe Communities Coalition (HCSCC) is reminding motorists to Click It or Ticket. Aimed at enforcing seat belt use to help keep families safe, the 2018 National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization will take place through June 3.

To kick off this campaign, HCSCC hosted an event Wednesday in front of the Huron County Courthouse.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half (48 percent) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2016 did not have on their seat belt. HCSCC has set a goal to increase Huron County’s seat belt usage to more than 97 percent by September of this year. In addition to the National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization Event, the HCSCC will be attending events through the county this summer to promote traffic safety and increase the public’s awareness of the importance of wearing a seat belt.
