NHS grads mistaken for reality TV stars

They say there are people in the world who look like you, sometimes called a doppelganger. What would it be like if your doppelganger had a famous reality TV show?

Twins Justin and Jordan Maddocks grew up in Norwalk and graduated from Norwalk High School in 2007. They experienced just that and decided to take advantage of the situation.

The Maddocks brothers, who now live in Canton, have been told for years they look like HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott, known as the Property Brothers, from the home fixer-upper show of the same name. They decided to find out just how much alike they looked when the celebrities came to Cleveland’s most recent home and garden show.

“It was a pretty exciting experience,” Justin said. “We’d been told for quite a few years we look like the Property Brothers. Then someone told us they were coming to Cleveland and said we should check it out. So we found some last-minute tickets that were pretty cheap and decided to go.

“We decided to dress like them for fun. At first, no one really said anything. Then we saw the Property Brothers were supposed to be on stage. They must have been running a little late because they weren’t on stage yet. There were more than 4,000 people standing around. ... Then we thought, ‘Hey, we should see if anyone will think we’re them.’

“A lot of people turned around. Then we thought we should walk up there. So we started heading toward the stage in between the rows of seats, then we started running up to the stage and everyone was cheering. They thought we were the Property Brothers. We didn’t actually get up on stage but a lot of people that thought we were them. Some diehard fans realized we weren’t Jonathan and Drew and we ended up telling them we weren’t the Property Brothers.”

The Maddocks wanted to meet their doubles and see if they were just as impressed by the similarities.

“After the show there was meet-and-greet,” Justin said. “We were about six people away from getting to meet them and Jonathan was getting a picture with one lady and he looked up at the line and he saw us and pointed at me. He was really surprised. Then we got to meet them. It was really cool because they couldn’t believe the similarities. We thought we were tall but they’re probably about 6-foot-4. You can’t tell just how tall they are from the TV. They’re much bigger in real life.”

The twin brothers enjoyed celebrity treatment the rest of the day.

“Afterwards when we were walking around, people kept coming up to us,” Justin said. “So many people were fooled and we kept telling them we’re not the real Property Brothers. We’re just imitators. And some of them would not believe we weren’t them. But we’re like 10 years younger than Jonathan and Drew, so you kind of tell a little bit with the age. One vendor even asked us to come and stand by his booth so more people come because they would think the Property Brothers were there.

To make things even more uncanny, the two sets of brothers share more than their looks.

“It’s actually crazy because I renovate rental houses,” he said.

“After I graduated with my bachelor’s in computer sciences, I wanted to invest in something and I thought that would be the best way to do that. ... Jordan works in pharmacy and he’s been interested in my renovations. He’s always been my finacial supporter. So it’s kind of like the Property Brothers. With Drew, he find the houses and does more of the financial side of things and then Jonathan does the more hands-on work with the renovations. And Jordan looks more like Drew and I look like Jonathan, so it’s kind of funny how that worked out.

“Now I have a good network setup and have a plumber and electrician I work with. So we’ve called it Maddocks Properties LLC.”

The doppelgangers share another similarity: their love of adventure.

“The Maddocks are always looking for the next adventure and opportunity,” Justin said.
