It's time to 'lower the heat'

• Sep 13, 2018 at 4:00 PM

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following letter to the editor was submitted by John Sabin of Oberlin.

I was glad to see your reporting on how hot the summer has been in Norwalk this year. (“It's been a hot year' in Norwalk," 9-7-18).

The fact is that there has been unusually hot weather all over the northern hemisphere this summer. Polling done by the conservative "Climate Leadership Council" (led by Reagan cabinet members George Shultz and James Baker) indicates that 81 percent of all Americans and 65 percent of Republicans think the government needs to do something about climate change.

The same poll found that 56 percent of Americans and 55 percent of Republicans support "taxing fossil fuel companies on their carbon emissions and rebating all the money directly to all Americans through a monthly check."

You can read about this poll and the "carbon dividends" plan at clcouncil.org. If you, too, believe that the government needs to act on climate change, I urge you to call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121and let Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown and U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan know. The time has come for bipartisan Congressional action to lower the heat.
