It's time we start doing something

NOTE: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Kevin R. Rishel of Norwalk:

As a concerned citizen, parent, grandparent and community member, I would like to touch on a subject that’s on my mind a lot lately but I don’t hear very many people discussing: the safety of our kids during school hours and the safeguards being put in place to prevent another senseless massacre.

In today’s society, we simply cannot just ignore this problem and hope it will go away by itself. As caring, loving, compassionate adults, we must seek answers and preventive measures. We must be proactive, not reactive. We as responsible adults must be able to discuss and debate this issue without recourse. We must be able to exchange ideas, input opinions without politics or prejudice for the sake of our children.

I am trying to organize a forum to get the concerned parents together and exchange ideas, get our questions answered and possibly reach common ground to keep our children safe while they attend school.

One school district in California has supplied their teachers with buckets of rocks and informed the instructors to have their students throw rocks at the shooter should an attack was to happen in the school.

Another school district has armed their teachers with 12-inch long mini baseball bats.

Please contact me if interested in attending public forum at 704-740-7941. Don’t get discouraged if I don’t answer, leave message.
