Being a parent is your job: just do it

• Apr 11, 2018 at 9:30 AM

This letter is in response to Richard Missler’s almost 700-word rant against guns, the one where he repeatedly called people who didn’t agree with him idiots.

Missler mistakenly blames guns for school violence.

The first recorded school shooting in the United States was in 1840 when a law student shot and killed his professor.

I think a lot of people, including minors, had guns at that time but weren’t running around mass killing fellow students. What really has happened since 1840?

First and foremost, God has been removed from almost everything in this country, including most of the mainline churches. We are now stuck with the religion of social justice.

While we’re at it, look at all the glorified violence, sex and drugs in movies, songs, TV, books, etc., that we are all exposed to nearly 24 hours a day.

Most of the time young people (particularly if they come from a not so good situation) are not held responsible for their own actions. Out-of-control emotion has replaced logic. Many, many young people have no respect for authority, themselves or anyone else.

Parents are no longer able to discipline their children with a deserved whack on their butt for fear of being arrested.

Do you know what kind of power that gives a minor with mush between their ears? Even teachers have to put up with out-of-control, self-centered spoiled brats.

It’s our own fault we have let the know everything powers that be convince us they know better how to raise our very own children than we do.

Guns cannot kill unless there is an out-of-control, self-centered mindless person holding it. Start looking in that direction.

Being a good parent is at times mostly a thankless job, but it is your job. Just do it. Stop giving your power away.

Remember there is a higher power and he expects us to do the job he gave us.
