Norwalk resident seeks cancer support group from men

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Craig A. Sharfenberg Sr. of Norwalk:

Following my recent cancer surgery, I began to cast around for men’s support groups and was very surprised to find almost none in our area.

I would be more than happy to sit down with others who are now or who have been treated for cancer.

There are a number of such groups for women, but I don’t believe that intermixed support groups would be successful. I realize that most men (including me) don’t enjoy discussing personal matters, but hearing another person’s view on his own situation (which might be similar to mine) could be very helpful to everyone present. Our doctors talk to us, of course, but they don’t have the time to listen to every little concern, and we can’t call them every time we think of a new question.

I’m somewhat surprised that through the American Cancer Society and similar useful groups that we do not have more support organizations and group “therapy” to help us better understand what has happened to us and what might be ahead for us.
