We are excited to tell you about an upcoming event, the Piggyback Run celebrating Holly Sneider. The event will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 on the square in Milan and will benefit the local charitable organization The Piggyback Foundation.
The Piggyback Foundation was founded in 2007 by Norwalk residents Dirk and Lisa Hiler to fulfill their desire to help children and families. Their specific focus was on children and families faced with a life threatening illness such as cancer maintain normalcy in the home. Their mission was to help “carry families through times of need,” because every child loves a piggyback ride.
The foundation started from donations and community garage sales with proceeds going towards helping others. With a growing reputation and giving community the foundation grew by leaps and bounds.
Five years later, the upscale resale and retail store “When Pigs Fly” opened. The funds generated by the store go back to the foundation to help families. It’s a circle of giving. The foundation gives to the community, the community gives to the store, and the store gives back to the community.
Our focus is on families from all walks of life, that are not receiving services elsewhere and need help to maintain normalcy for the children in the family.
Any life threatening disease such as cancer is scary, whether it is a child diagnosed or a parent. There are doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, surgeries and treatments. The foundation helps a family for up to one year of their application to help with extras such as sports, music lessons, and dance classes. Events such as birthday parties, nights out for dinner and movie and weekend getaway are just a few examples of how families can escape the daily routines of illness.
We have a passion for helping people facing life-threatening illnesses like cancer. We can't do anything to change their diagnosis, we can only try to ease their stress and help them focus on the joys of life instead of the seriousness of their illness.
The purpose of this event is to generate funds to assist The Piggyback Foundation with their local mission. After the run, we will have an after- party in the Milan Townhall. Our goal is to bring the feel of a big city marathon to the small town of Milan. The Piggyback Run is celebrating the life of Holly Sneider, of Milan, who lost her battle with cancer in November 2011 at the young age of 39. Holly was a wife and mother of three small children and was helped by the Piggyback Foundation in her time of need.
