A motorist died from injuries sustained Wednesday morning in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike.
Troopers with the Milan post of the state Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash, which occurred at 11:02 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of turnpike in Sandusky County’s Washington Township.
Investigation at the scene of the crash determined an illegal over-height commercial vehicle was traveling east and struck the underside of a bridge that was under construction, troopers said. Construction apparatus was dislodged from the bridge and struck a passenger vehicle traveling directly behind the commercial vehicle.
The driver of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, whose name is being held at this time, suffered severe facial cuts and injuries. He was transported from the scene of the crash by Sandusky County Life Squad to Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. While en route, the driver died from his injuries.
Steven John Beheng, 58 of Miltona, Minn., was driving the 2019 International semi hauling a drop-deck trailer. Upon the trailer were several smaller cargo trailers with ramps. The rear cargo trailer had ramps secured in an upright position. These ramps, which were illegal in height, struck the construction apparatus, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation and neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected as a factor in this crash. Assisting troopers at the scene were Ohio Turnpike Maintenance Department, Lucas County Coroner’s Office and Madison Motors.
