TIFFIN — A kayaker has died after capsizing Sunday in the Sandusky River.

Members of the Tiffin Fire and Rescue Division were dispatched at about 12:15 p.m. after three fellow kayakers saw a man capsize. They then called for help while near the Huss St. bridge on the north end of Tiffin, said Chief Kevin Veletean.

The man was spotted near County Road 38 and 33 — about a mile north of where the three kayakers called from — and rescue boats were deployed, the chief said.

Boat crews made contact with the kayaker and pulled him out of the water at roughly 1 p.m. He was then taken to shore and paramedics transported him to Mercy Health Tiffin Hospital, where he later died.

The man’s name has not been released pending family notification, Chief Veletean said. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating.
