Abby Chapman, 16, of Tiffin, was driving a silver 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt south on Township Road 73, north of Township Road 130, when she failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the car, which slid left of center and collided with an oncoming vehicle — a black 2009 Jeep Liberty driven by Derek Schleter, 29, of Tiffin, said troopers with the Fremont post of the state Highway Patrol.
After the collision, both vehicles slid off the east side of the road and came to rest in a ditch, troopers said.
Both drivers were transported to Tiffin Mercy Hospital by Seneca County EMS. Chapman suffered serious injuries and later was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo by a LifeFlight helicopter.
Schleter was treated and released from Tiffin Mercy.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash, and both drivers appeared to be wearing their safety belts, troopers said. The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Department, Seneca County EMS and John’s Towing and Recovery.
