ELYRIA — A trooper assigned the Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol was assaulted this morning while responding to a call for service.

At 7:16 a.m., the trooper, who was not named in a press release about the incident, was called to check the welfare of a pedestrian reportedly walking in the road on Diagonal Road near Whitehead Road. The trooper located the suspect on Diagonal Road near Biggs Road just outside the village of LaGrange.

Upon making contact with the suspect, the suspect was confrontational and began to attack the trooper by striking the trooper in the face, troopers said. The struggle continued for several minutes until additional officers could respond and help the trooper take the suspect into custody.

The suspect, Cornelious L. Carey Jr., 44, of Elyria, was charged with felonious assault and incarcerated at the Lorain County Jail. The trooper was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The LaGrange Police Department, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, and LaGrange Fire and EMS provided assistance.

The incident remains under investigation at this time, troopers said.
