County board hires Schick

Donald Schick, 44, former superintendent of the New London school system, was hired Monday as consultant supervisor by the huron County Board of Education.

Schick was given a one-year contract beginning Aug.1. Consultant supervisor is a new title in the realignment of duties within the county system.

 

Museum feedback

(Photo caption) Col. Charles A. Hill used this desk while commanding Johnson’s Island Confederate Prison Camp. When he left, he gave it to his orderly, Mark Hebblethwaite, who bequeathed it to his grandson, George Coultrip, of Rt. 113 east of Milan. Paul F. Linder, present owner, has loaned it temporarily to Firelands Museum, where it on display in the parlor.

 

‘Hottest’ graduates from St. Paul’s

St. Paul High School class of 1933 had it’s 45th reunion Saturday with 37 members and guests attending Mass at 4:30 p.m. followed by a dinner at the Maple Tree Restaurant.

Mary Englert reminisced about graduation night, June 3, 1933, when the temperature reached 103 degrees, a record high for that date.

Robert Reineck read a poem recently presented him, which was written by his cousin, Sister Mary Francella, S.N.D., freshman homeroom teacher of the class who died June 30.

Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Ruffing, 25 Christie Ave., entertained the class by spending the remainder of the evening renewing old friendships and looking over old photos and scrapbooks.

Veitch returns to city agency

Former Norwalk resident Thomas W. Veitch has returned to the area to work as an agent with the Battles Insurance Agency.

For the last 7 1/2 years, Veitch has worked as the office manager for Hartford Insurance Co. in St. Louis, Mo. Prior to that he worked for the insurance company in Hartford, Conn. and Cleveland. Veitch is a 1963 graduate of Norwalk High School and was graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Veitch is the son of Mrs. Mary Veitch and the late Harold Veitch. Harold Veitch was the owner of the Bowen Company before it was sold to Battles Insurance Agency in 1966.

Veitch and his wife, Mary Catherine of St. Louis, have three children, Shane, Lacey and Amanda.
