Prescriptions now delivered to room before you leave hospital

By Nishit Shah, MD • Jun 11, 2018 at 9:00 AM

If you have been a patient in the hospital, we know that after you’ve been discharged and are on your way home, the last thing you want to do is make an additional stop at the pharmacy.

So in April, Fisher-Titus Medical Center introduced a new service called Meds-to-Beds.

Through Meds-to-Beds, your discharge prescriptions can be ordered and delivered directly to your hospital bed before you leave the hospital.

Our Fisher-Titus Pharmacist will process your prescriptions and a member of our Pharmacy team will discuss your medications with you prior to your discharge. We also can work with your providers to make sure the prescribed medications are covered by your insurance plan.

Why offer this program at Fisher-Titus?

According to national data provided by the advisory board, 40 percent of prescriptions are filled the day of patient discharge, 22 percent are never filled, 20 percent are filled one to two days post-discharge and 18 percent are not filled until three to nine days after discharge.

Patient-reported barriers to prescription adherence include lack of transportation, financial concerns and long wait times at the pharmacy. Research has found that having a delay in starting medication regimens can be detrimental to patient outcomes. Nationally, about 1/3 of admissions are due to medication non-compliance. This equates to $1 out of $9 of total health care spending waste. So, by offering the option of filling medications at the bedside, we hope to ensure that patients have their prescriptions in their hands at the time of discharge. This process also provides comprehensive pharmacy services and promotes convenience by minimizing issues with insurance and eliminating inconvenient stops at the pharmacy.

How does the program work?

When you are an inpatient at Fisher-Titus, let your nurse or doctor know you would like to enroll in Meds-to-Beds to fill your prescriptions. We will take care of the rest. Although prescriptions filled upon discharge cannot be added to your bill, we are able to collect your co-pay when we deliver the medication to your bedside. We accept a majority of prescription insurance plans and directly bill your prescription to your insurance provider and only ask for any copay required by your insurance carrier when services are rendered. The Meds-to-Beds program accepts debit cards, credit cards, and H.S.A. cards. We are unable to accept cash or checks at this time. If you prefer to pay with cash or check, we can still order your prescription for you and it will be ready for pickup at Kaiser Community Pharmacy conveniently located at 251 Benedict Ave. near the hospital.

Once your prescription is filled, a member of our pharmacy team will deliver it to your bedside and counsel you on the medication. When you are ready for a refill, your prescriptions can be refilled at Kaiser Community Pharmacy or at your preferred pharmacy.

Since it started, the Meds-to Beds program has been well-received by our patients. Our hope is that with prescriptions in-hand, patients can then travel uninterrupted to their homes and continue the healing process. It couldn’t be more convenient!
