Norwalk looking into zoning changes

Cleaning up some zoning ordinances and the future of a cell tower were topics of concern at Tuesday night’s Norwalk City Council work session.

Council member Chris Castle said defining and re-working the zoning ordinances will “make it easier on city planners in the future,” he said.

“We know in 20 years we will have annex other areas.”

Zoning officer Mitch Loughton said “we are looking toward future expansion.

“Doing this now is getting the legislative part out of the way now.”

Council member Jordy Horowitz said if the city does annex land in the future, it should not forget about the schools.

“I just kno a lot of work goes into recruiting businesses,” he said. “I would hope our school district profits from any expansion.”

Also discussed was the city’s interest in a lease agreement with a cell tower.

The city is in the second year of a 40-year lease with the tower that makes the city $927 per month. The city can sell its part of the lease for $150,000, or keep the lease which could raise more than $700,000.

There was talk the $150,000 could be used to help with the projected $807,000 deficit the city is facing this year.

These issues will be discussed further at Tuesday’s regular session beginning at 7:30 p.m.
