Group makes pitch for new senior center and garage

Will Huron County ever get a new senior center?

Officials from Senior Enrichment Services were on hand at Tuesday’s Norwalk city council work session to present their plans for a new home. The organization’s present home is in an old building owned by Huron County at Shady Lane. Commissioner Terry Boose said the building’s days are numbered and the organization is on the fast-track to find a new home.

There was discussion and debate at the meeting with nothing decided. Council president Steve Euton said negotiations would need to take place between SES officials and the city administration. He encouraged both sides to meet early and often to see if the they can get on the same page and work out an agreement.

Here are some facts distributed about the SES and the proposed building at Tuesday’s meeting:

History

• Late 1960s a county-wide task force was formed to assess the needs of the elderly.

• Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1972 (it is not a county agency).

• Awarded grants under the Older American’s Act for services.

• Provides transportation, information/referral, outreach and meals.

• Located to present facility in 1976.

• In 2016, 60,074 meals were served within the county and 300,000 miles of transportation provided.

Future

• Center needs to be a destination that will generate interest and income.

• New center reflects the needs of the changing senior population.

• Activities not just for people 60 and older.

Growing population

• Huron County’s senior population will grow 6.5 percent from 19.3 to 25.8 from 2010 to 2020 and there is a projected growth of 5 percent from 25,8 to 30.8 from 2020 to 2030.

Facilities

• The center will be 100 by 150 feet (15,000 square feet) with offices, commercial kitchen and dining, rest rooms, three activity rooms and a ground-level walking track.

• The vehicle building will be 70 by 160 feet (11,200 square feet), which will include 16 spaces to keep vehicles out of the weather.
