Norwalk girls close dual season with win at Vermilion

VERMILION — The Norwalk girls golf team finished 9-3 in league duals this season after Monday’s road win over the host Sailors at Willow Creek.

The Truckers shot a 218 to finish comfortably ahead of Vermilion’s 249.

For Norwalk, Anna Little shot a 45, followed by Noelle Jackson (50), Hannah Dumbeck (60), Carmen Krichbaum (63) and Chloe Thomas (63). Also scoring included Scarlet Krichbaum (71).

Norwalk will begin Division I sectional play on Wednesday at Sycamore Springs in Findlay.

TENNIS

Norwalk 4, Ashland 1

ASHLAND — The visiting Truckers improved their record to 18-1 with Monday’s road non-league win over the Arrows at Brookside Park.

Megan Berry lost a tough three-set match at first singles for the lone Norwalk loss. She fell to Korinne Harris, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

At second singles, Gabby Horowitz beat Lydia Sinchok (6-3, 6-2) and Lauren Metcalf won at third singles, 6-1, 7-6 (2).

At first doubles, it was Jordan Gran and Sela Berry winning 6-0, 7-5. The second doubles team of Mara Berry and Alexa Moore were also victorious (7-5, 6-4).

The SBC Lake champion Truckers host SBC Bay champion Willard today in a non-league match prior to Division I sectional play on Thursday in Fremont.

Edison 5, Fre. SJCC 0

MILAN — The Chargers (14-3, 12-2) swept past visiting Fremont St. Joseph in Monday’s rescheduled SBC Bay division match at Edison Park.

Mariah Medina won in straight sets at first singles (6-4, 6-0), as did Emily Vogus at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1). Jayla Medina won by forfeit at third singles.

At first and second doubles, the teams of Kaylee Ries and Torri Keyser, and Lexi Weyer and Emily Moore both won by identical sweeps (6-0, 6-0).

FOOTBALL

Norwalk, St. Paul ranked

COLUMBUS — Both Maple City teams appear in this week’s Associated Press high school football state poll ahead of their respective big games on Friday.

In Division III, Norwalk (5-1, 1-0) is ranked for the first time this season at No. 14. That is just behind No. 13 Sandusky (5-1, 0-1), which the Truckers visit on Friday in a big SBC Lake division game.

In Div. VII, both St. Paul (5-1, 3-0) and Mapleton (5-1, 3-0) are tied at No. 10. That tie won’t last long, as the Mounties visit Norwalk on Friday in a game that will determine sole possession of first place in the Firelands Conference.

Kickoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Oak Harbor 2, Edison 0

OAK HARBOR — The Rockets scored a pair of second half goals to top the visiting Chargers in Monday’s SBC Bay division match. 

Edison looks to bounce back on Thursday at 5 p.m. vs. Tiffin Columbian.
