Near-record turnout for St. Paul alumni outing

NORWALK — It was a near-record 30-team turnout on a perfect Saturday morning for the St. Paul FCEDO scramble school fundraiser as part of alumni weekend.

Matching the weather and the turnout were scores and shots that will be long remembered at the Eagle Creek Golf Course.

No. 1 on that list was the 7-iron that Norwalk Catholic Schools president Dennis Doughty hit on No. 12.

“It needed no less that a quarter-of-a-ball roll forward to be an ace,” Doughty said, shortly after he gave his welcoming speech Saturday night at the alumni dinner. “Other teams were watching the shot and they saw it was headed right at the hole. It would have been my first.”

There was another remarkable shot hit — but this one was propelled with the compressed-air cannon “driver” the course uses on No. 7. With Mike Conley the recipient of the shot, his ball, from just short of 375 yards, landed in the hole, giving his team a huge bump in their final score.

The father-daughter Scavuzzo team had a serious run at hole prizes as both won in a matter of a half-hour, Gabby for her longest drive for a lady on No. 13 while Scott knocked it stiff with his second shot on 15.

With four-person passes to premier golf courses in the area including Plum Brook Country Club on the line, four teams showed a birdie barrage. The best, with a 15-under par (56) score was the team of Tim Phillips, Jeff Kashian, Todd Moore and Pat Welfle.

The second place team with a 58 included the McFadden Brothers, Mike and Neil, John Naseman and Tim Hallock.

The Weisenberger family, father, Thom, and sons Brad and Kevin, teamed with Tom Mowery to fashion a 59 for third place. They won a scorecard playoff with a team that included Dave Bleile, Matt Gross, Steve Fries and (NFN) Smith.
