COLUMBUS — A solid first day showing has the Edison girls golf team in position to finish in the top five out of 24 teams at the Division II state championships.

The Chargers shot a 354 total from five players at the Ohio State University Gray Course on Friday. That puts Edison in eighth place entering today’s final 18-hole round — but just seven strokes away from the fifth-best score.

Independence (320) is running away with the team title, followed by Lima Central Catholic (332), Shelby (335) and Shaker Heights Laurel (339) in fourth.

Newark Catholic (347), Sugarcreek Garaway (347) and Waterford (348) are just ahead of Edison and within striking distance of the Chargers, who are also nine strokes ahead of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne (363).

For Edison, both Jacque Butler and Zoe Grant finished the par 70 course with an 81, and are tied for 18th place overall in the field of 72 players.

Jordan Pruitt shot a 91 and is in 43, while Lauren Neher finished with a 101 and Abby Woodyard had a 107.

Day 2 action resumes at 9 a.m. today.
