Three teams entrenched in playoff contention

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the fifth official weekly football computer ratings on Tuesday.

The weekly computer ratings are released every Tuesday beginning in the fifth week of the season, leading up to the final report on Sunday, Oct. 28, when 224 schools (top 8 in each region) will officially qualify for the playoffs. The top four teams in each region host a first-round game.

In Division III Region 10, state-ranked Norwalk (7-1) made its jump from fourth to second two weeks ago with a win at Sandusky. However, the Truckers just slightly slipped to third this week, as No. 1 Clyde (17.6000) and Bay Village (17.1625) are just ahead of their 17.0878 points.

However, much of that will be settled in town this Friday, as Norwalk entertains the Fliers — with the winner also assured at least a share of the SBC Lake Division championship.

Regardless of that outcome, Norwalk is in a very favorable spot to host a first-round playoff game for the second time in program history. They close out with a trip to Tiffin Columbian (6-2), the No. 4 team in the region, in Week 10. A third SBC Lake team, Sandusky (5-3), is in fifth.

In Div. VII Region 26, two Firelands Conference teams are serious in contention — as St. Paul just passed South Central (6-2) from seventh to sixth with last week’s 45-6 head-to-head win over the Trojans. With a pair of wins to end the regular season, the Flyers will likely remain sixth, though could slide up one spot to fifth.

South Central fell two spots to No. 8 in this week’s ratings. However, even if they win the final two games of the season over Crestview (3-5) and New London (0-8) — the Trojans could find themselves in a numbers crunch for the eighth and final spot.

Along with needing teams it beat to win, South Central could benefit from a loss by current No. 7 Patrick Henry in either of the next two weeks, as well as No. 10 Arlington (6-2) to beat No. 9 Leipsic in Week 10.

South Central is looking for its first-ever playoff appearance.

The top 12 schools in each region are listed below in divisions there is an area team involved — with record and average points.

Of the 718 OHSAA member schools playing football this fall, the largest 72 schools are in Division I, while the remaining schools are divided equally in Divisions II through VII (approximately 108 schools in each division).
