Two playoff rematch locations set

By Norwalk Reflector staff • Updated Nov 5, 2017 at 5:36 PM

COLUMBUS — The St. Paul-Calvert rematch won’t happen far from Norwalk.

The Division VII Region 26 second-round game between the Flyers (11-0) and Senecas (8-3) will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Don-Paul Stadium in Fremont.

St. Paul — which finished No. 1 in the Associated Press poll — won in Week 3 at Tiffin Calvert, 23-7, on Sept. 8. The Flyers and Senecas have played yearly since 1992, with the exception of 2015 because of Calvert’s prior league affiliation.

St. Paul is no stranger to playoff games at Fremont, where it holds a 2-1 record over three games.

In 2006, the Flyers beat McComb (40-28) in the second round, then in one of the most thrilling playoff games in program history, beat Hopewell-Loudon (29-28) the very next week for a regional championship. In that game, the Flyers opted to go for two points and the win in the final minute instead of kicking a potential game-tying extra point.

In 2008, the Flyers again played Hopewell-Loudon at Fremont for a regional title, with the Chieftains pulling away for a 42-21 win.

In another rematch, Bellevue (8-3) gets a second shot at Clear Fork (11-0) in a Div. IV Region 14 second-round game. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Arlin Field in Mansfield.

The Redmen lost a late lead at Clear Fork in Week 2, eventually falling in overtime, 20-14, on Sept. 2.

Bellevue also has deep history in postseason play at Mansfield, as it won a wild 42-35 game over unbeaten and top-seeded Big Walnut en route to winning Div. III Region 10 as the No. 6 seed.

That game also featured a lengthy power outage that delayed the game.

Also of note, in Div. II Region 6, Olmsted Falls (10-1) will face Wadsworth (11-0) on Friday in Brunswick. The Bulldogs are coached by 1999 Norwalk graduate Tom DeLuca.

In Div. VII Region 28, Sidney Lehman Catholic (10-1) faces Delphos St. John (7-4) on Friday at Allen East. Lehman is coached by former Plymouth coach and athletic director Dick Roll.
