St. Paul, Edison ranked in first AP football poll

COLUMBUS — Two area teams appear in the first of seven weekly Associated Press high school football state polls, it was announced Monday night.

In Division V, Edison (2-1) is in the others receiving votes category at No. 16. The Chargers lost a last-second game to Firelands (20-17) in Week 1, but have allowed just 10 points defensively in wins over Norwalk and Western Reserve since.

In Div. VII, St. Paul (3-0) opened at No. 7. The Flyers have outscored St. Mary Central Catholic, St. Joseph Central Catholic and Tiffin Calvert by a combined 109-14 through the first three weeks of the season.

No. 1-ranked teams in each division include Cincinnati St. Xavier (Div. I), Cincinnati LaSalle (Div. II), Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Steubenville (Div. IV), Eastwood (Div. V), Marion Local (Div. VI) and Minster (Div. VII).

Tw0 volleyball teams ranked

There were also two teams among the top 20 in their respective division in the first Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll, released Monday afternoon.

In Div. II, Norwalk (5-2) is listed at 18th. Its lone two losses are to Parma Padua (No. 3) and Chardon NDCL (11th) on Sept. 2.

St. Paul (7-0) nearly debuted atop the Div. IV poll, as the Lady Flyers (268) are No. 2 by five points to New Bremen (273). New Bremen earned 14 first-place votes to St. Paul’s 12.

Two boys teams in state XC poll

In the third weekly coaches state poll in cross country, two area boys programs are among the ranked.

In Div. II, the Edison boys are listed at No. 20, while New London’s boys program is ranked 15th in Div. III.
