A house fire on Gibbs Road left a Norwalk family without a home Saturday.

The Norwalk Fire Department was called to a house fire at 4771 Gibbs Road at 1:37 p.m. Saturday, a fire that would require help from other departments and take seven hours to extinguish, salvage and overhaul. The damage estimate was $320,000.

The report filed over the weekend said firefighters responded to the structure fire in an attached garage and home that was “fully involved” when they arrived on the scene, with “heavy fire” showing from the front porch.

“After (the garage) was knocked down, (firefighters) moved to the front porch and extinguished it,” the report said.

“Fire inside the home was extinguished quickly. However, the attic was fully involved. (Firefighters) pulled ceilings to gain access to the attic and extinguished. ... The center of the home was declared a collapse zone due to the roof trusses sagging. Entry and exit was made only through windows on the (left and right) sides of the house to attack hot spots burning in the attic.”

The department was able to determine the fire started in the garage near the main door, leading into the home and with the garage door open, “the northwest wind had pushed the fire to the front porch and eventually into the attic.”

It is unknown how the fire started, though. The Norwalk Fire Department called the state fire marshal to the scene for assistance with the investigation.

The house was considered a total loss and “most contents were a loss,” according to the report.

Milan Township Fire Department supplied mutual aid with an engine and tanker truck and the Huron River Joint Fire District manned the Norwalk station with an engine and sent some of its personnel to the scene to assist in extinguishing and overhauling the fire.

The Red Cross was called to assist in housing the family Saturday.
