EHOVE students 'realize there is a need in the community'

By JOE CENTERS • May 15, 2019 at 3:00 PM

AVERY — Jimmy Rock is a disc jockey and owns Five Star Entertainment. His life is dealing with people.

But he got a closer look at life and people this year with his involvement with the Drug Free Clubs of America at EHOVE Career Center.

Rock was a mentor with a group of students and for their community project they spent a day at the Victory Kitchen in Sandusky.

“We spent about five hours there,” he said. “We got to talk with the staff. ... We realized there is a need in the community.”

All of the students involved in Drug Free Clubs of America were recognized with their mentors Tuesday morning with a breakfast and assembly. All of the groups got up in front of their peers and talked about their community projects.

Rock and his group spent the day preparing food for those in need in Sandusky. Along with hot meals, Victory Kitchen also is a pantry where people can pick up food to take home.

“Victory Kitchen's mission is to be the helping hands for the lost and hurting people in the community, keeping the focus uncluttered, pure and simple. … Victory Kitchen's mission is based on Psalms 41:1-3 — ‘Blessed is he that considers the poor ...,’” the Rev. Lonnie R. Walters said on the Victory Kitchen website, www.victorykitchen.net.

“I would definitely do it again,” Rock said. “It opened up the (students’) eyes to the real world.”

Rock said youngsters live in the world of Facebook and Instagram where everything is in the moment about their lives.

“Highlights don’t reflect the real world,” he said. “We have a lot of privileges that we don’t appreciate. It was great and I plan on doing it again.”

Students volunteer to participate in Drug Free Clubs of America. They remain members by passing random drug screens; the results aren’t shared with school officials.

Victory Kitchen is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located at 1613 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. For more information, call 419-627-8732.
