SHELBY — A local culinary arts educator has been recognized as being Ohio’s best.

Pioneer Career and Technology Center sent 12 culinary arts student to compete in the 2019 Ohio ProStart Invitational on Feb. 23 and 24.

At the event, Pioneer’s culinary arts instructor, Chef Seth Weibel, received the 2019 Ohio ProStart Teacher of Excellence Award.

The award annually recognizes “exceptional educators who demonstrate unwavering dedication to the ProStart program and its students.” The award is sponsored by Bob Evans and has been presented since 2002.

“These exceptional instructors expand the classroom boundaries to simulate real work experience by motivating the students to participate in internships, engaging industry experts as guest speakers, arrange field trips to make the program more meaningful for the students as well as bring out the best in their students,” according to a media release announcing Weibel’s award.

Weibel, who has been the culinary arts instructor at Pioneer for 10 years, was chosen out of 78 chefs at 57 career centers in Ohio.

He is now Ohio’s candidate for consideration for the National Educator of Excellence Awards, which will be held in conjunction with the National ProStart Invitational May 8 to 10 in Washington.

The ProStart Invitational is divided into two competitions: culinary skills/techniques, and restaurant management. The culinary competition requires student teams to prepare a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only butane burners with no access to running water or electricity. The management competition requires students to develop a business proposal for an original restaurant concept and present to a panel of industry experts.

The results are still pending.

Pioneer Career and Technology Center has been providing career-technical education to high school juniors and seniors for 50 years. The school serves more than 1,150 students — including ones from Willard and Plymouth-Shiloh — representing over 35 career tech programs and 14 partner schools and offer adult education programs.
