Olena couple's grandson becomes ER doctor

• Jul 5, 2018 at 6:00 PM

Matthew J. Sherman received a doctor of medicine degree in June from the University of Texas’ Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas.

Sherman has joined the emergency medicine residency program at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, the second-largest emergency facility in the United States.

His grandparents, Joe and JoAnn Sherman, of Scranton Road in Olena, were an important influence in Matt’s journey to become a doctor.

He used to spend a few weeks in the summer visiting his grandparents on their farm. JoAnn, a former emergency room nurse at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, helped Matt become a volunteer at the hospital. Matt was stationed on a chair outside of the emergency room, and just watching the activity day after day inspired his early decision to become an emergency room physician.

Grandpa Joe made the trip to Dallas for the graduation. However, JoAnn's health prohibited her from attending.

Many members of the Sherman family continue to live in the Norwalk area.
