Randy and Karen Ruggles announced that Scholarship America has awarded a scholarship to New London’s Elizabeth Logan, a local Subway sandwich artist, under the Subway Fresh Start Scholarship program.

“We are very proud of Elizabeth for her pursuit of her educational goals. Elizabeth has worked hard to provide our guests with a great restaurant experience,” Karen Ruggles said. “She is very deserving of this honor and we wish her continued success in college.”

Logan is a recent graduate of New London High School and plans to attend The University of Toledo in the fall. She plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Logan, the daughter of Richard and Tracey, graduated as one of the top-five academic students at New London.

Scholarships were awarded to 200 employees of Subway restaurants in the United States in memory of the co-founder, Fred DeLuca.

DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant in August 1965 when he was a 17-year-old high school graduate simply looking to help fund his college education. He was given a $1,000 loan from a family friend, Dr. Peter Buck, and together they turned a single Bridgeport, Conn. sandwich shop into one of the largest brands in the world.
