NEW LONDON — New London High School students and faculty are celebrating another year being designated as the safest drivers in the Huron County school system during the “Buckle-Up America” challenge.

This annual competition observes the number of student and faculty drivers who wear their seatbelts while commuting to and from school. It is sponsored by North Central EMS, Ohio State Highway Patrol Norwalk Post and Summit Motorsports Park.

Troopers from the Norwalk Post selected an unannounced week to make visits to school parking lots and observe the number of students and faculty wearing seat belts during their commute. New London High School students and faculty members had the highest seatbelt usage at 95 percent. The other participating high schools include Western Reserve 93 percent, St. Paul 91 percent, Monroeville 89 percent, Norwalk 88 percent and South Central 85 percent.

During a school assembly, North Central EMS presented junior and senior class officers with the traveling trophy which states “they are the smartest students in Huron County.” Representatives from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Norwalk Post congratulated the students on their safe driving efforts and encouraged them to continue to buckle up.

Summit Motorsports Park presented students with two tickets to the recent Cavalcade of Stars race.
