Originally, Shane Pierson was on the agenda to be approved for a one-year, limited contract. However, the board adjusted its agenda once the meeting was brought to order Tuesday evening. Both Shane and wife Laura Pierson, who served as coach until February, submitted their letter of intent to resign. Both will finish their current contracts through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
Shane apparently changed his mind about accepting the one-year contract and submitted his resignation Monday. The Piersons cited “personal reasons” in their letters as the cause for their resignations.
Laura Pierson was suspended from acting as coach following alleged “inappropriate behavior” linked to text messages with her players.
“I’d say a lot of players, and a lot of individuals in the district, were upset about the situation,” said Superintendent Rodge Wilson, who declined to offer further details of the matter. “But it’s behind us. It’s in the past and we’re moving forward. ... I wish them both the best and we’re going to miss them here.”
At Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved Brenda Friend to serve as the new girls’ head basketball coach. However, it declared a vacancy for Laura’s counseling and Shane’s teaching positions.
