SPRINGFIELD (TNS) — A Springfield man was indicted in connection with an October bank robbery.

Sean Jones, 32, was indicted in Clark County Common Pleas Court on a charge of aggravated robbery.

He previously pleaded “not guilty” to a related charge in municipal court, where his bond was set at $50,000. He is due in court this week for an arraignment on the felony charge.

An affidavit filed in the case said DNA evidence collected from clothing abandoned shortly after the robbery linked Jones to the crime.

Springfield police began their investigation when they were dispatched Oct. 22 to Fifth Third bank on North Limestone Street. When they arrived at the scene they checked the area for a suspect but did not find him, the report says.

“The (teller) said the suspect was wearing a gray sweatshirt and sunglasses,” the affidavit says. “She went on to say the suspect handed her a hand-written note demanding money. He would then pull a bag from under his shirt and hand it to her to put the money in. Once he received the money he fled from the bank northbound towards the bike path on Red Coach Drive.”

Officers were able to collect a pair of gloves, sunglasses, toboggan, wig, scarf, sweatshirt and a white thermal shirt on the bike path, according to the affidavit.

“I was provided video surveillance from the bank and after watching it determined the clothing found on the bike path matched the suspects clothing from the robbery,” the affidavit says. “The gloves, scarf, sunglasses, wig and shirt were taken to BCI for DNA testing.”

The BCI lab called Springfield police and alerted them the gloves and scarf had DNA in them and it belonged to Sean Jones. Jones was arrested Nov. 25 on outstanding warrants and was interviewed by Springfield police.

“He agreed to talk and said that he was not in town on the date of this robbery,” the affidavit says. “He denied knowing anything about this.”

However, when officers told him about the DNA, the affidavit says, he refused to talk.
