Tania Darby said her son was playing under a tree with friends about 5 p.m. Sunday. She said she looked outside for him, heard a shot, saw the kids scatter, and saw Jaylen on the ground.
Darby believes she knows who fired the shot. She said she does not know how the youth would get a gun, or what could have led to her son being shot.
"I have no clue," Darby said.
Sandusky County Juvenile and Probate Judge Brad Smith confirmed Elijah Starks, 14, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and other related offenses in his court. The judge said the youth was arrested following the shooting and will be held in the Sandusky County Juvenile Detention Center while his case is pending.
He will appear in court for pretrial hearing with his attorney some time "in the next several weeks," the judge said by email.
Darby described Jaylen as a homebody who liked to play video games and mostly kept to himself.
