Mom has 'joy-spreading mission' at assisted living facilities

The first Thankful Givings adventure will take place on Thanksgiving Day.

“The mission (is) to express gratitude for the good things in our lives on Thanksgiving, by spreading love, happiness and positivity to those who may be in need of a morale boost,” said organizer Michelle Pletcher, who is seeking participation from Huron County residents.

“In the year 2015, I decided to begin a new holiday tradition with my young daughter. On Thanksgiving Day, we got up early and headed out to area assisted living facilities to visit with (residents) and hand out cards and flowers to the residents, who were there instead of with their families for the holidays. It was an extremely rewarding experience and we made so many people smile.”

This year, Pletcher, of Sandusky, has decided to expand the annual tradition and invite family, friends and community members to join their adventure.

“My thought was, if I we had enough volunteers, we could visit multiple facilities in the general area and spread more positivity and happiness. I shared my idea on social media and the response I got was overwhelming. So many people seemed interested in doing something good for the holiday,” she said.

“In years past, I have covered all costs associated with this joy-spreading mission. They were fairly minimal and I was happy to do it. However, with the expansion of this tradition comes an increase in overhead. Last year, we visited three facilities and handed out over 200 cards and flowers. With the volunteer numbers we already have and number of facilities we hope to visit, I am projecting a need for close to 1,300 cards and flowers. To help cover the cost of these items, I am seeking business sponsors and donations from individuals,” Pletcher added.

“I want to ensure we have enough flowers and cards for every single resident, at every single location we visit. So any sponsorship or donation helps.”
