Many would agree that local coffee shops are an essential part of any community — getting the day going, bringing people together and fueling the work to get things done.
Barista for LynMarie’s Coffee on Main Grace Billman said she’s seen how caffeine can make a difference in a person’s day.
“I think it keeps people going,” Billman said of the perfect cup of coffee. “Coming into a place like this kind of makes it fun. Instead of just drinking a plain old cup of black coffee, you can add a little bit of sweetness or whatever and it makes it more enjoyable. It brightens your day up a little bit.”
Willard’s Wired Coffee Bar, Megan Shankey agreed.
“It gets you going in the morning and keeps you going throughout the day. And it’s healthier than the energy drinks people are drinking nowadays,” she said.
“I think people like coffee because there’s so many different things you can do with it — hot, iced, frozen, extra shots, blended like a milkshake or smoothie, the flavors — there’s a lot of different ways to have it.”
Stacey Reer, owner of the Wired Coffee Station in Milan said she thinks java is the spark behind making things happen.
“It’s a very important part of starting your day,” Reer said. “And it really does bring people together. When people get together and they have these big important discussions, they do it over coffee, and when people get up in the morning, they have to have coffee. It brings people together, fuels good ideas and keeps people motivated.”
She said this is especially true as new ways are invented to drink coffee, like the Coffee Station’s newest addition — cold brew nitro.
“It’s a cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen that comes out of kegulator like beer,” she said. “(The nitrogen in it) opens your up blood vessels and gets it into your blood system three times as fast. But here’s the kicker: it doesn’t give you the jitters and it doesn’t give you the ups and downs. Actually it has less caffeine than a cup of coffee. The difference is just the way it gets into your system. It’s really neat.”
In celebration of National Coffee Day, most of the local shops will have special deals and flavors. The Coffee Station’s include: Baked apple pie latte, butter pecan, toasted pumpkin white chocolate, pumpkin pie latte and cold brew nitro.
Throughout the county, residents can celebrate the national day with any of their favorite espresso drinks, but here are the top three choices at a few of the local shops according to the baristas and owners there:
