They face one of the most important and difficult tasks in life: raising children on their own. Often they’re also among those who have seen the most heartache. Yet, not many services exist for these women.
That was something the First Presbyterian Church men’s group realized and felt compelled to fix. The group decided to hold an annual event devoting to pampering these special women — a Single Moms Spa Day, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. May 6 at the church.
“We have a small men’s group and our church was trying to reach out in the community and we’ve been doing this for years — reaching out to the community,” said church member Bob Sands.
“Last year we didn’t know it when we started our stuff, but the church came up with a plan for one year of service, so the whole church was trying to do something for one year of service. We felt that one year was not enough. We wanted to make it annual. So my small men’s group, we’ve tried a couple different things. We’ve tried a reading program at the library that’s fallen by the wayside, but something else came in its place and we now have six tutors meeting at the library, on Mondays and Wednesdays.
“That’s a very small thing, though. This Single Moms Spa Day is a much bigger event. We want to do it every year,” Sands said of the event that is in its second year.
“We looked in the community and we said, ‘Who needs something that’s not being provided by anyone else?’ We came up with the single moms.”
The event’s first year was successful with about 50 single mothers walking away relaxed and pampered.
“We’re expecting double last year and we do still need more cosmetology type people, nails, facials, makeup (to offer services) at the event,” Sands said.
“K-Love has done this. They do it across the nation. So I contacted them to find out how they did and how it all went and usually the first year they have a lower number and usually the next year they about double that number. We had 50 people sign up last year. And I’m looking to have about 100 this year.”
Sands said mothers appreciated last year’s spa day because “they don’t get treated like we treat them very often. Last year’s event offered free services including hair styling, manicures, hand parafin waxes, portraits, massages, guided imagery sessions, makeovers and several vendors. The church also offered free childcare while they enjoyed a couple hours to themselves.
Sands said they hope to bring all of that back and maybe a little more because, as a single father, he understands what the women are experiencing.
“That’s kind of a lonely feeling, kind of helpless sometimes,” he said. “We just thought if we could show some single women that there’s still hope and still love in the world — even if we could only do it once a year — that wold be worth it.”
