Pop tabs help teenager raise money for charity

MILAN — After three months collecting pop tabs, Edison High School junior Molly Davis is in the final stretch of her Teen Leadership project.

Teen Leadership is a class which asks students to take on causes that help their community and others. To Davis, raising money for the Ronald McDonald House seemed like the perfect project. She decided to collect pop tabs for donations to help families with children in the hospital. The charity once helped Davis’s own family when she was ill.

“The reason behind me choosing the RMHC as my leadership project was that I, at one point in my life, was very sick,” she said. “My parents used the Ronald McDonald House resource many times while I stayed in the hospital.”

As part of her project, Davis and the other members of the Edison Teen Leadership Corps visited the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio, and helped around the house — getting a first-hand look at where their donations would be going.

The project is going well so far, Davis said.

“I have not had one week where I haven't had a large donation of pop tabs waiting for me!” she wrote in an e-mail. “Local businesses, family, students, and those who have read the papers (Reflector & Register) have helped lift this project up beyond my expectations!”

People have turned in large donations of pop tabs every week since Davis announced she was doing the drive. She plans to wrap it up in April, and is excited to see just how many tabs there are. She asks that donations be submitted by April 9.

Donations of any size may be dropped off at the school offices, 2603 Ohio 113 E., Milan. This includes tabs from beverages, soup or other cans.
