It's strawberry season

Despite the season’s inclement weather, produce came in right on schedule at Kramer’s Farm Market.

Owner Susan Kramer shared what’s ripe and ready for picking, what produce will be available soon and how a happy accident turned into a business.

“What’s in and really big this season are the strawberries,” said Kramer, whose business has been a local staple for more than 20 years.

“We always try to get our produce locally . . . with the exception of the Tennessee tomatoes and the North Carolina peaches that have that sweet ‘home-grown’ flavor.”

Almost 22 years ago, Kramer was newly married and planning to be a stay-at-home mom for her children.

“When my children hit school age, I was able to get back to gardening, which I love,” she said.

The mother of three soon noticed her few crops were yielding in excess, so much so that she decided to sell the extras from a small food stand.

“But then more and more people started to stop in to see what I had,” Kramer said. “All of a sudden this small stand turned into a full-time job. … It honestly felt like this thing (business) sort of fell into my lap, like an accident, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Her favorite take-away from the business is interacting with customers.

“I love getting to meet and talk with the people that come in here. I mean some of these people have been coming in for 20 years. … They’ve become family,” she said.

Kramer’s own children, now adults, have worked in their mother’s business since they were old enough to help.

“All three of my kids are here and they still come around to help and they’ll even bring their own families and friends,” she said.

Come mid-July, Kramer will celebrate the farm market’s 22nd anniversary. Plus, the arrival of yellow and bi-colored sweet corn, black raspberries and more.

“You know how they say that ‘when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.’ … Well, that’s what I got here.”

Kramer’s Farm Market is located at 5224 Whittlesey Road in Norwalk, and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays (with amended hours.)
