Victorian Lady B&B up for sale

The 13-year owners of a local award-winning bed and breakfast are ready to sell the business, looking forward to a time when they can be the guests instead the hosts.

The Victorian Lady Bed & Breakfast, which opened at its 175 W. Main St. location in 2005, was listed for sale under Ewell & Associates Inc. for $499,000. It’s listed as being “restored and ready to own and operate.”

Owners Tim and Vickie Dauch said there’s nothing that prompted the sale except that it “seemed like a good time to start thinking about retiring before it gets to the point that we can’t handle it.” 

“We’ve owned this house since 2001 and I’d love to have more time with family. We have three children and five grandchildren and we’re both retired from our other jobs,” said Vickie Dauch of her and her husband Tim, who run the bed and breakfast together.

“We’re just thinking it’s time to retire and do some of those other things we’ve been missing. We’re not really sure what all we’re going to be getting ourselves into, but traveling maybe. With all of our guests here, you hear all their stories of traveling and it makes you want to do that too.”

Dauch said she and her husband have met a lot of “very interesting” people from all over the world, including an Australian couple who just visited Norwalk and a lot of people from Germany who come for Borgers Ohio Inc.

“We’ve made a lot of friends through the business,” she said. “You become more than (guests and hosts). You do; you become friends with these people. It’s more of a family than you’d realize.”

One thing is for sure, when the place does sell, the Dauchs are going to feel the void.

“We’re going to miss it,” she said. “It’s really a great kind of business to own. We’ve even had a few guests (who) have come every year since we’ve opened (who) called us up and said ‘Oh, please tell us it’s not true.’ That was nice.” 

Dauch said the Main Street location is listed for sale to be sold as a house or with the business, but said she and her husband are hoping someone will want to take over and run the Victorian Lady “in the same manner.” 

She said the business and building are in “top shape,” ready for someone to take over.

“It’s such a good set-up for a bed and breakfast,” Dauch said. “We’re hoping whoever buys it will want to purchase some of the contents inside too. It’s all set up and ready as a bed and breakfast. Hypothetically they could walk in and we’ll say ‘Here’s the keys’ and it’ll be ready for them. But if you had a huge family it could be nice for that too.

“This business just seems to be very respectful use of the property,” she added. “It’s a great way to share this type of a home like this with the community, rather than chopping it up into several apartments, which I hope doesn’t happen.”

While the Victorian Lady is up for sale, Dauch said they have no intentions of closing.

“We’re not closing,” she said. “We’re still open for business as usual. We’ll be here until that day comes (to sell).”

The house was built in 1890 by a railroad bridge contractor, according to the real estate listing.

“This three-story, almost 7,000-square-foot home is a fine example of Queen Ann Victorian architecture, with a large wraparound porch, stained, beveled and leaded glass windows, quarter sawn oak woodwork and wains coatings throughout,” the listing details said.

“Many of the original features (are) preserved along with the many updates including the kitchen. A carriage house (garage) is in rear, with an apartment above it for additional income. (The) bed and breakfast has a 4 Diamond rating from AAA and can be used for events such as weddings, parties, meetings and dinners along with day to day room rentals. Let the business pay for your dream home.”

 

Groundbreaking for new Huron Goodwill Store

HURON — It’s a good day for Goodwill Industries as it gets one step closer to opening the new store that will replace a long-standing one in Huron.

An informal ground-breaking ceremony was held for Goodwill Industries on Tuesday at the new site, 310 Lake Erie Parkway. That is just off Cleveland Road near the intersection of Rye Beach Road and visible from the Ohio 2/Rye Beach Road exit.

Joining the Goodwill team and board members for the event included representatives from Tusing Builders and Civista Bank.

Expansion, renovation and improved store layout are the primary factors initiating the building of a new store as these couldn’t be accomplished in the existing location. The new store will provide an additional 3,000 square feet of space with a sales floor design that will be spacious and easy for customers to shop.

Additional amenities that customers can look forward to will include a covered drive-thru, donor drop-off area with sliding doors, similar to those seen at the Norwalk location, and a large private parking lot.

As a non-profit organization relying on donations of community members, fiscal responsibility is of utmost importance. Features such as LED lighting and other energy efficient measures will reduce utility costs by up to 40 percent. The overall operating costs for the Huron location will not increase and, in fact, will decrease significantly upon completion of the financing period.

Goodwill will continue to conduct business as usual during construction at their current site located at 422 E. Cleveland Road, Huron, just behind the Dairy Queen.

Construction of the new site is expected to continue into September with the relocation and grand opening planned for early October.

Lehrer earns Real Estate award

SANDUSKY — Henry “Mac” Lehrer, with Hoty Enterprises, Inc., was awarded the certified commercial investment member (CCIM) designation by the CCIM Institute, one of the leading commercial real estate associations in the world.

The designation was awarded last month at the institute’s business meetings in Tampa, Fla.

Lehrer was among the 164 commercial real estate professionals who earned the designation by completing advanced coursework in financial and market analysis. He also passed the CCIM comprehensive examination, the final component in the designation process.

Firelands among nation’s top hospitals for heart attacks

SANDUSKY — Firelands Regional Medical Center recently was named one of the best hospitals in the nation to receive care following a heart attack.

Firelands received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2018. Firelands is one of only 95 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes Firelands’ commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Firelands has “reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care,” as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

“As a Silver Performance Award recipient, Firelands Regional Medical Center has shown it is a leader in implementing standards of care and protocols for its patients,” said Deepak Bhatt, executive director of interventional cardiovascular programs.

“This award reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff who care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said Tina Ammanniti, area director of cardio and pulmonary services.

 

Cooperatives to start national search to replace retiring GM

A national search will be conducted to replace Markus Bryant, the general manager of Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative of Wellington in Lorain County and North Central Electric Cooperative of Attica in Seneca County.

Bryant will be wrapping up a 40-year career with electric cooperatives, including 24 years with LMRE and 21 years with NCE. He is the longest serving general manager in the 83-year history of LMRE.

Bryant joined LMRE in 1995. In 1997 the North Central General Manager was planning to retire and talks opened between LMRE and NCE to form a management and shared services cooperative. Federated Energy Services Cooperative (FESCO) was officially formed in 1998 and Bryant became president of FESCO. As president he has served as general manager of both cooperatives since 1998. FESCO shares cooperative management staff, accounting, billing, engineering, communications, community and member relations, and marketing departments. By sharing employees and resources, the cooperatives save an estimated $1.6 million a year.

Lorain-Medina serves 16,380 consumers with 1,536 miles of line in Lorain, Medina, Ashland, Huron and Wayne counties while NCE serves 9,658 consumers with nearly 1,800 miles of line in Seneca, Crawford, Wyandot, Hancock, Wood, Sandusky, Huron and Richland counties. Lorain-Medina has 35 employees and North Central employs 34. About 20 employees are shared between the two cooperatives. The line crews are not shared.
