The Norwalk company also won silver or bronze awards for nine other wines. D & D Smith Winery was one of 11 wineries in Ohio to win a double-gold medal.
Co-owner Danielle Smith said they’re “definitely proud” of the accomplishments.
“Each year we enter we come out with a gold or double gold award,” she said. “We keep trying and trying and we’re very proud of all the accomplishments and the wines that we put out.”
Smith said for the business, more important than receiving the awards though is just making sure there’s quality wine for the community to enjoy.
“We all just want to have quality wine,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s from (another winery in the area) or ours, just so long as we have it then people will come visit and enjoy it.”
D & D’s other award-winning wines are: Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Strawberry, Hillbilly Watermelon and “He Said She Said” (all silver) while The Locals and Frontenac Gris were awarded bronze medals.
The Strawberry wine will be featured at Norwalk’s Strawberry Festival. Smith said the community can go to the beer tent any of the four days and try the award-winning wine.
In the next couple months customers will be able to enjoy a renovated winery scene as well, with new menu items to “ramp things up a little bit.”
“It’s very exciting,” Smith said of the renovations and changes. “We currently already offer food, but this will bring more homemade options — pizza, pasta, homemade options. They’ll be a nice addition to the homemade wines.”
Located at 401 W. Main St. in Norwalk, D & D Smith Winery was established in 2008 and has been at its current location since 2009. It offers more than 35 varieties of wine, including wine slushies.
