Hazelwood earns awards in AP contest

• Updated Mar 26, 2018 at 10:17 PM

COLUMBUS — Norwalk resident Mark Hazelwood earned multiple awards at the Associated Press Media Editors awards ceremony Saturday in Columbus.

Hazelwood has served as sports editor for the Norwalk Reflector and Sandusky Register since late last summer.

The awards are for Hazelwood’s work with the Register in 2017. He took home the most awards by any writer in the entire state this year, and has earned 51 awards in his 12-year career. The Reflector does not use the AP for its wire service, so the newspaper and its staff were not eligible for awards in the AP’s annual competition.

Here are Hazelwood’s awards:

• Best sports columnist, first place

• Best sports feature writer, second place

• Best sports writer, third place

• Best sports enterprise, “Soul-searching: High School Wrestling Participation at a Crossroads,” first place, and “Norwalk Tennis — Building a Dynasty,” third place.

• Best daily sports section, second place
