'Generous donations — that's how we function'

When Pigs Fly will enjoy the increased shopping that comes today with Shop Small Saturday, not for increased profits but because it means they’ll have more to give families in need.

The upscale resale and retail shop, owned by Lisa Hiler, supports The Piggyback Foundation, which helps families and children to maintain “normalcy” when someone in the family is diagnosed with a life-altering illness, such as cancer. One hundred percent of the store’s proceeds go to assisting those families, making this time of year very important for them.

“That’s the whole point,” said store manager Laurie Schmuhl. “People’s generous donations — that’s how we function and it’s our whole precedence. We get donations, fix it up, change it, paint it. When people buy it, then that money goes back to the families. We have several volunteers and just a few managers.

“The more and the nicer the donations we get are, and the less we have to purchase to fill the store, is the best. All the donations we get — it’s wonderful.”

Schmuhl said the special Saturday traditionally “goes very well” for the store.

“We’re fully staffed. It goes so well, we can hardly keep up,” she said. “Trying to keep up is crazy. … It’s actually very, very wonderful and I don’t think there’s a single year we aren’t like, ‘Oh my gosh. How much did we sell?’ We sell so much.”

The store manager said she thinks setting aside one day for the local Mom ’n’ Pop shops benefits everyone.

“I think in general to all small shops all over the country, it helps. It helps people (think of) stopping and shopping local because it goes to their local profits and the shop’s income, or in our case, it’s money to our families. Local margins are up when people make it a priority to shop locally.”

The shop will be open all day for Shop Small Saturday, which coincides with Light Up Norwalk today. Customers who purchase something will receive a coupon to receive 10 percent off of their next purchase. There also will be many snacks, treats and drinks out for all to enjoy.
