St. Paul girls bounce back with road win

NEW LONDON — After two straight losses, the St. Paul girls basketball game got a fast start to get back in the win column with a 63-40 win on Thursday in a Firelands Conference game at New London.

The Lady Flyers (6-2, 3-1) raced out to a 23-9 lead after one quarter, and extended the advantage to 40-20 by halftime to leave no doubt. St. Paul had lost a 58-56 game vs. Crestview on Dec. 13, then never got untracked in a blowout loss vs. Division II Perkins on Tuesday.

In Thursday’s win, Lauren Chandler scored a game-high 15 points behind the strength of three 3-pointers. Megan Hammersmith added 14 points, while both Camille Endsley and Danielle Smith each scored 11.

For New London (2-5, 1-3), Gabby Ledbetter finished with 15 points, while Kiaya Thierry added 10 points.

Free Norwalk youth girls camp Dec. 28

NORWALK — The Norwalk girls basketball program will host a free youth basketball camp for grades 3-6 over the Christmas break.

The camp will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 28 in the main Norwalk High School gymnasium. There is no cost, and the camp will include instruction from the current Norwalk girls coaching staff and players to focus on individual skills and drills along with team activities.

Campers will also be fed pizza at the end of the camp.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Margaretta 66, Willard 65

CASTALIA — In a game that was tight throughout, the Crimson Flashes came up a point short in Thursday’s SBC Bay Division loss to the Polar Bears.

Willard (3-2, 1-1) got a game-high 27 points from Cooper Parrott, who connected on five 3-pointers in the defeat. Davon Triplett added 14 points, and Terry Baldridge scored 10.

Myles Pinkston also added eight points for the Flashes, who trailed 36-29 at halftime — but tied the game at 49 after a 20-13 scoring edge in the third quarter.

WRESTLING

Norwalk tops Ontario, Madison

ONTARIO — The Norwalk wrestling team came away with a pair of dual wins over host Ontario and Mansfield Madison on Wednesday.

First, the Truckers topped the Warriors by a 45-21 score. Norwalk then handled Mansfield Madison, 55-15.

In the two wins, standout junior wrestler Ethan Hernandez earned his 100th career win. Norwalk is off until Dec. 28-29 when it travels to the Brecksville Holiday tournament — one of the toughest in the state.
