DEFIANCE — The Sandusky American Legion Post 83 baseball team opened its season with a dominant doubleheader sweep at Napoleon.

In a doubleheader on Sunday at Perkins High School, the team split with Ottawa and will take a 3-1 record into Wednesday’s 6 p.m. game at Oak Harbor.

Bolstered by strong performances from area players, Post 83 opened with a 19-9 win in five innings, then followed with a 9-2 victory.

In the run-rule win, Gavin Starcher was 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored from the leadoff position. Starcher, who graduated from St. Paul last week, was also named honorable mention All-Ohio on Friday.

Also helping the 19-run performance was Bryson Harvey (Norwalk 2018), who was 1 for 3 and scored two runs. Recent Norwalk grad Leighton Battles was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Also from the area, Ethan Prenatt (Bellevue) was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

In Game 2, Starcher got the start on the mound and threw two shutout innings for the win. He allowed just one hit with a strikeout and a walk. He was relieved by Harvey, who allowed two runs on six hits with a strikeout and no walks in his two innings of work.

In a 2-0 win in Game 1 on Sunday vs. Ottawa, Dalton Hay (Bellevue) was brilliant on the mound for Post 83. He threw all seven scoreless innings for the complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Starcher reached on a fielder’s choice, stole a base and scored one of the two runs for Sandusky in the win.

In a 6-0 loss in Game 2, Post 83 was limited to just two hits — which included a single by Harvey. He also reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

Post 83 has 35-plus games scheduled prior to the district tournament, which begins July 16 at Heidelberg University in Tiffin. It won the district yet again last year to advance to the state championships, where it finished 1-2.
