Cheek takes 3rd in weight class at EWL Championships

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Evan Cheek (Edison) placed third in his weight classe during the EWL wrestling Championships over the weekend.

The freshman advanced to the semifinals of the 133-pound bracket.

In the quarterfinal, Cheek won by decision over George Mason’s Vincent Rodriguez 3-0.

Cheek (15-11) was then pinned by Lock Haven’s Robert Rehm by fall at 2:29.

But Cheek rebounded to win his last two matches for third.

In the consolation semifinals, Cheek recorded a 10-0 major decision over Edinburg’s Anthony Rivera and downed Rodriguez 4-2.

Cheek entered the championships with a 6-9 mark.

ALLIANCE — Jesse Gross (St. Paul) went 11-9 with one fall, one tech fall and two major decisions at 157 pounds in his freshman season at Mount Union.

Women’s Hoops

SOUTH EUCLID — Sophomore Ciara Reed (Edison) played in 23 games, including five starts, for Notre Dame College this season.

She averaged two points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

The Falcons end their season with a 20-10 overall record, including a 17-7 mark against MEC competition.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Freshman Bri Pittenger (Edison) started four of John Carroll’s 26 games this season.

She averaged 6.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

Pittenger scored in double digits 10 times with a season-high 21 points against Marietta College Dec. 19.

John Carroll went 13-13 overall, 8-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a first-round OAC tournament loss.
