Sauder Village hosting Dr. Seuss Weekend

ARCHBOLD — Sauder Village will host a new Dr. Seuss Weekend on Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21 as part of the 2018 Author Days event.

With a variety of hands-on activities, special demonstrations and free admission for anyone dressed like a Dr. Seuss book character, this new event is sure of offer families a day of happy memories at Sauder Village.

Guests visiting Sauder Village for this special event will have an opportunity to decorate a flower pot to grow your own Grickle grass from the book Mr. Lorax and become a Cat in the Hat by making your own hat! Guests can make a mini broom, create a flower, decorate an egg and make duck feet from the book I Wish That I Had Duck Feet! There will be a fun fishing-themed activity and the opportunity to learn about eggs and places that animals dwell. Guests will also enjoy visiting with the costumed guides and working craftsmen throughout the Village to experience Ohio’s historic past from 1803 thru 1928.

Known to the world as Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904. He is recognized around the world as a writer, poet and cartoonist. He is the author of 46 books for children based on imaginary characters and rhymes. Many of his works have also been adopted into specials for television and feature films.

As part of the 2018 Author Days celebration, Sauder Village is offering free admission on July 20 and 21 to anyone who comes dressed like a Dr. Seuss book character.

“Our Author Day Events were a great success last season and we look forward to having guests of all ages join us again this year to celebrate reading and learning while enjoying many fun, hands-on activities,” shared Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations. “Many people have fond memories of their favorite Dr. Seuss books and guests are encouraged to be creative with their costumes to receive free admission for a fun-filled day at Sauder Village!”

In addition to the Author Days activities, there will also be special horse demonstrations on July 21. On Saturday only, equine engineer Keith West will be demonstrating his horse training skills during the program “From the Horse’s Mouth: Communicating With Your Horse.” Sessions will begin at 10:15 a.m. and run through closing. Mr. West will be evaluating the horse’s needs and will share information about training and communicating with horses. Keith will be working with horse owners but will be willing to answer questions and interact with Sauder Village guests to help them understand his proven techniques. This program was originally slated to be held in June but was rescheduled due to high temperatures.

Some of the other special events planned yet this summer at Sauder Village include the 35th Annual Doll and Teddy Bear Show and Sale/Antique Bike event on August 4 and 5, Rug Hooking Exhibit August 15-18 and a Barbershop Concert on August 25. The Black Swamp Walk to End Alzheimers will also be held at Sauder Village on August 25. Historic Sauder Village is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Historic Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. Admission costs $17 for adults and $11 for students ages 6 to 16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and Sauder Village members receive free admission to the Historic Village for an entire year. Senior, Military and AAA discounts are also available.
